The Star Shepherd is an AI-crafted felt-animated music film for Chinese singer Roy Wang, inspired by his UNICEF visit to Malawi and the children he met there. On the surface, it tells a simple story of a lonely boy under a sky of animals and stars; underneath, it is a quiet thought experiment about human–machine ethics and how we choose to see one another. By using AI to imitate the slowness and imperfection of handmade wool, the film asks: when we train machines to recognize distant children, are we also retraining ourselves to care more tenderly? In Chinese, “A.I.” sounds like “爱” (love). The film gently wonders which one is educating the other—our algorithms, or our capacity for empathy.
